Interview date: 13 June 2017

The Department of Geography wishes to appoint a lecturer in geographical information science (GIS). The successful candidate will develop GIS-based research excellence that complements and enhances our current research, and develop and contribute to our undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes.

Applicants will have been awarded a PhD and will have relevant high-quality publications.  A background in geography is not essential – but a multi-disciplinary outlook and willingness to apply GIS to a range of settings are required to succeed in this post.  Research expertise in emerging areas such as ‘big data’, mobile technologies, crowdsourcing, data linkage, etc. would be an advantage.  Applicants with an interest in engaging with ‘users’ of GIS research, and developing innovative income streams and/or consultancy in GIS-related activities, are particularly encouraged to apply.

The Department has a long pedigree of GIS teaching, including a postgraduate programme that recruits internationally. The Department is looking to build on this success and the successful candidate will enthusiastically develop and contribute to our MSc GIS.  The Department has a range of expertise in GIS, including databases and programming and currently a GIS Manager and GIS Senior Technician, who provide support for research and teaching to staff and students.

The successful candidate will be required to demonstrate experience of teaching and willing to contribute to the GIS teaching curriculum at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and integrate research specialisms into teaching, while developing skills relevant to the graduate labour market; thus contributing to the Department's strategy of skills-focused and research-informed teaching.

Further details of our current teaching and research groups are available through the Department of Geography webpages on the University website

Prospective candidates may seek informal discussions with the Head of Department, Professor Donald Houston and/or Dr Alastair Pearson, Course Leader MSc GIS.
