We have one full-time place available on the MSc Sports Performance Analysis programme at the University of Chichester, involving a funded full time work placement within a Premier League football club (Southampton FC).


Interview date: April 2019

Work Placement dates: July 2019 - June 2020

MSc Sports Performance Analysis


This programme of study is designed for graduates seeking to develop specialist knowledge in Sports Performance Analysis. The MSc Sports Performance Analysis programme is carefully aligned to employer needs and aims to provide the knowledge, skills and experience to successfully pursue a career in the area of Sports Performance Analysis. The processes and theories underpinning performance analysis are explored, together with key practical competencies, all delivered in conjunction with a dedicated, intensive work placement offering invaluable industry relevant experience. The course benefits from innovative assessments, excellent staff support, strong emphasis on theory to practice, and provision of a Macbook with SportsCode for the duration of studies. The academic, personal and professional development opportunities afforded by this programme have yielded exceptional graduate employability.

The placement will offer an acute insight into working within a Premier League football club. The role will be to support the work of the Lead Data Scientist in providing statistical insight in scouting, recruitment and analysis across the first team and academy. The placement duration is full time over the 2019-2020 season. The successful applicant will receive a monthly allowance, and lunch included.


MAIN DUTIES

Undertaking research projects to highlight team-level tactical trends.Creating statistical player models using R.Creating bespoke data visualisations for tactical reports and dossiers.Presenting results to analysis staff and other key stakeholders.Application and report development to facilitate end-user access to analysis.Opportunities to gain experience with live scouting and performance analysis.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

Essential

Obtained or undertaking undergraduate degree in a relevant subject area (e.g. Mathematics, Computer Science etc.)Strong ability to solve numerical problems and answer questions through data analysis.Strong knowledge of professional football and a desire to work in an elite sporting environment.

Desirable

Knowledge of statistical methods (e.g. regression, ANOVA, cluster analysis etc.)Experience of statistical modelling in a statistical computer language (e.g. R, Python etc.)
